Down the TBR Hole #14

I need to go through this list and determine what I really want to read. I have quite a few on my physical shelf that I am making my way. I like doing these because it reminds me of older books that I’d really like to read.

Rules:

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next time

Current TBR Shelf – 269

Collide – Melissa J. Crispin – I like the idea of a fighting to save earth and an afterlife but the characterization of the main woman being “selfish” makes me back away. I can’t stand whiny characters who think they know everything.
Decision: Remove

The Great ForgettingJames Renner – While I love the question at the end of the summary, is it better to forget or face your mistakes? The summary seems too much like running around trying to survive and I am just not quite in the mood for that story at this moment in time.
Decision: Remove

The Man of Primrose LaneJames Renner – I think I added some of these book because their setting is in my state. This one is just a murder mystery and not one that really interests me.
Decision: Remove

The Trouble with Being GodWilliam f. Aicher – Again there was a time I would have enjoyed this story. Another murder mystery but nothing that pulls me in.
Decision: Remove.

The Rules of Ever After Killian B .Brewer – I love the idea of messing with fairytales and traditional ever-after tropes. This sounds like fun.
Decision: Keep

Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World – Vicki Myron, Bret Witter – It’s about a library cat! I mean how can you not want to read this! I adore animals, especially dogs and cats. (My own cat is currently curled up on my lap as I type this). I have to read this and just bask in the happiness of it.
Decision: Keep

Pivot Point – Kasie West – I like the idea of having to chose between two realities. While this seems to surround a love story primarily it still holds interest for me. I will have to give it a shot one day.
Decision: Keep

Enchanted – Alethea Kontis – I can’t figure out why I would add this one. It sounds super generic. Kissing a frog, becomes a prince and now she has to fall in love with him. Nothing screams original or new.
Decision: Remove

The Lie Tree- Frances Hardinge – The Lie Tree idea is what is appealing to me. I am not sure I’ll get to this one anytime soon but I think I might give it shot sooner or later
Decision: Keep

Are Prisons Obsolete? – Angela Y Davis – While this sounds interesting. I think it is more something I would watch a documentary about then read.
Decision: Remove

Keep: 4
Remove: 6

This is probably one of the more accomplished versions that I have done of these posts. The trick will be to see how many I add before the next one.

ABC Challenge (D)

Time to dive into the next letter of the alphabet and check out what stands out. This got a little delayed because my books were in boxes for a while but they are out and now on their shelves!

Earlier Lists: (A) (B)(C)

Memorable Titles with Starting with D:

Da Vinci Code – Dan Brown – I loved this book. The twists and turn were amazing and compelling. It was also fun because my mom read it right before we went to France and Italy and we were able to see a lot of the art mentioned in the story.

Dread Nation – Justina Ireland – This was a fresh look at zombies. I loved the way it dealt with history and past issues while also creating stunning story. I can’t wait for more from this world.

Dance of Dragons – George RR Martin – I enjoyed reading the Game of Thrones series. This one set up so much and I really wish the next book would come out. But I guess I have the show to give me answers at least.

Decipher – Stel Pavlou – Another fun thriller adventure that ties in history.

Doomsday Key and Devil’s Colony – James Rollins – I have said before that I adore the Sigma Force series. These are two great parts of that series. Doomsday Key was the first one I read and I was hooked.

Darkest….– Gena Showalter – The whole Lord of the Underworld series has Darkest as the first word in the series. This skiers is a guilty pleasure for sure. It is almost done which is goo because these last few books haven’t been my favorites

Dream Thieves – Maggie Stiefvater – This was Ronan’s book and solidified my love for him as a character. I cannot wait until we get his full series.

Books Starting with D on my TBR List:

Down the TBR Hole #12

New year and time to go through this list again. I am determined to get this shelf down to books I will actually read in the future.

This was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.
Links will be  on the titles for the books Goodreads page. (I am going to do ten for this round of this tag).

TBR – #258

Between the Lines – Jodi Picoult– At first glance of the cover I had no idea why I placed this on my list. After reading the summary I know exactly why. The whole idea of having a book boyfriend and then him actually being real and wanting out. I love it and think it would be a sweet and fun read.
Decision: Keep (I have both books in my shelf so I am going to round this up as a keep for both)

Life of Pi- Yann Martel – I have seen this movie and really enjoyed it. I don’t know though if and when I will ever get to the book. I felt like the movie gave a clear story and I don’t know if reading it will add anything. I am going to take it off for now but I do want to read it one day.
Decision: Remove

Bones Omnibus – Mark Wheaton- Something about a dog who takes out demons. But all in one volume? I am not quite sure what this is and how it got on my list.
Decision: Remove

Revolution – Jennifer Donnelly – I like the idea of past and present connecting but honestly I don’t see myself reading this anytime soon. It sounds interesting but not enough to keep on the list.
Decision: Remove

Angelfall – Susan Ee – I love the idea of an angel like apocalypse. I like the idea of angels being good and bad.
Decision: Keep

The Fireman – Joe Hill – I have read two other books by Joe Hill and I really enjoyed them. I really want to get to this one, once I am ready for a scary book.
Decision: Keep

The Invention of Murder: How the Victorian’s Revealed in Death and Detection and Created Modern Crime – Judith Flanders – A whole book about how murder led to detective stories and the history behind it all sounds fascinating.
Decision: Keep

A Murder in Time – Julie McElwain – I like the time travel idea but the rest doesn’t sounds that interesting. She time travels and solves a mystery but it doesn’t sound like anything connects.
Decision: Remove

A Court of Thorns and Roses – Sarah J. Mass – This one is everywhere. I have it on my physical shelf and I really want to read it soon. I just need to be in the mood to go through what is out of the series.
Decision: Keep

Daughter of Smoke and Bone – Lani Taylor – Another one I have head a ton about. I really want to get to it too but again need to be ready to dive into a full series.
Decision: Keep

Total:
Keep:6
Remove: 4
TBR-249 (I noticed again that Goodreads had on my TBR list a handful of books that should be on my Read list. I fixed those and thus the number doesn’t quite add up right)

Down the TBR Hole #9

It has been about a month since I’ve done one of these posts so I decided to jump back into my TBR shelf and see what can come off. This is a handy thing to do since I have a tendency to continuously add to this list, so taking off some is not a bad thing!

This was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.
Links will be  on the titles for the books Goodreads page. (I am going to do ten for this round of this tag).

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next time!

Current TBR: 252

The Children’s Home – Charles Lambert
The summary tells me very little. It also barely has 2 stars on Goodreads which is a bit disconcerting. I don’t find myself wanting to run out and get this one, so it’ll go for now.
Decision: Remove

Ren: The Man Behind the Monster (Book #1) – Sarah Noffke
I like the idea of someone realizing that having too much power has corrupted them. I am curious how this one explores the idea of someone understanding they are a monster and fixing that side of them.
Decision: Keep

Soul’s Asylum: The Parasite Lives – Derek E. Pearson
Holy crap there are at least 4 plot lines in the summary alone. Aliens, telepaths, an epidemic and a murder mystery. I am already too overwhelmed.
Decision: Remove

How to Suppress Women’s Writing – Joanna Russ
Exploring the the barriers that are in place for women and minorities in the art world? I am all for that.
Decision: Keep

Envious – Katie Keller-Nieman
Sound alright but nothing new or exciting.
Decision: Remove

Riders (Riders #1) – Veronica Rossi
Someone dies and becomes one of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Yes, please!
Decision: Keep

Figment (Insanity #2) – Cameron Jace
Why do I have the second in a series on my list without the first? I mean I like the idea of Alice in our world but I’m gonna have to read the first book then decide if I go onto the second.
Decision: Remove

Time on Her Hands (The Lineage 3) – Melissa Jarvis
Again somehow ended up adding the third book in a series. I have to stop doing that!
Decision: Remove

The Rook (The Checquy Files #1) – Daniel O’Malley
A mystery with a number of elements, sounds interesting.
Decision: Keep

Breeder (Arrow’s Flight #1) – Casey Hays
Not sure I like the idea of someone being forced to breed and then fighting that, especially since the summary sounds like there is a lot of harsh punishments involved.
Decision: Remove

Kept: 4
Removed: 6
Current TBR – 243 (Again found a few books that I have read and thought were on my “Read” list but somehow weren’t. This is a good exercise for finding the glitches on the shelf too)

Have you read any of these? What are your thoughts on what I decided to keep versus get rid of?

Down the TBR Hole #8

It is that time again to see if I can take some books off my TBR list. I added a few from last time but I don’t think I added too many. I enjoy doing these  posts mostly because it reminds me what I have on my list and sparks my interest in some things I may have forgotten about.

Current TBR 259

Regeneration X (Regeneration Chronicles #1)
– Ellison Blackburn – I like the idea of regeneration but the summary sounds very generic. I like these ideas but you have do give me a bit more than just; she is going to restart life but it isn’t what she thinks life will be.
Decision: Remove

Accidental Death – Jill Thrussell- I love the premise but the summary is not written well. It has run on sentences and repeated phrases over and over again. It makes me think that is how the book is written and that worries me.
Decision:Remove

A Crucible of Souls – Mitchell Hogan – Again the premise is alright, I love sorcery,  but it seems very generic. He is out to find someone to teach him, learn about his past and the world may end. I need something new and different.
Decision: Remove

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking #1) – Patrick Ness – Now this peaks my interest. I love the idea of hearing others thoughts. I always thought that would be seriously annoying. I am curious about this one. (I also have the sequels on my list. I will keep all for now)
Decision: Keep

The Leprechaun Delusion – Leviak B. Kelly- I have zero idea of where this book came from. Something about atheism and a group of people being fooled in how they think? I can’t quite get what it is about. I don’t even know if it is fiction or not. I mean I do like the idea of reading about how people decide on following a religion or not but this has a weird feel, like it is going to be mocking and I am not a fan of that.
Decision: Remove

Genesis – Andreas Laurencius – Again no idea where this came from. Seems to be nonfiction trying to answer the questions of life and the universe. I do find that interesting but I also tend to want to research the person and see if they are studied or just someone talking. This isn’t just opinions apparently there is “evidence” of all of it. Plus the cover doesn’t fit the material.
Decision: Remove

Alex + Ada, Vol. 1 – Jonathan Luna – I seriously do not remember adding of these books. Again super generic sounding. Meets a robot and realizes he is more.
Decision: Remove (I have other volumes here so I am removing all of them)

Shallow Graves – Kali Wallace – A murder victim who comes back from the dead and can sense people who have murderous intentions? Now that is interesting.
Decision: Keep

Symptoms of Being Human – Jeff Garvin – A story that sounds like a true look at being genderfluid. I am extremely interested.
Decision: Keep

None of the Above – I.W. Gregorio – A story about being intersex, exploring the trials of being defined as one gender or the other and not fitting either. Again I am super interested.
Decision: Keep

Removed: 6
Keep: 4
Current TBR: 246 (I removed a series and I also noticed that there were about 5 books that should have been on my Read shelf. No idea why they weren’t. I transferred them over which shortened the shelf some)

What do you think of the books I decided to keep or remove?

Down the TBR Hole #7

I thought it was time to go through my TBR shelf on Goodreads again and see what needs to be taken out. The list has grown quite a bit because for June one of my favorite authors was recommending new books every day and I just kept adding more and more to my list. So let’s see if we can take some others off to balance things out!

Current TBR 261

The Calling (Gateway #1) – Louise G. White
I have no idea why this one was added. It sound pretty generic and doesn’t strike me as interesting.
Decision: Remove

The Weeping Books of Blimney lane – Drea Damara
Again don’t remember adding this one. Sounds alright but again not really striking me as one that is going to end up on my bookshelf anytime soon.
Decision: Remove

The Sandman Comics – Neil Gaiman
I read the first/prologue of this series and really enjoyed it. I have heard how great it is and I really want to finish it. The issue is the all the books are pretty expensive. I will finish it one day and I am going to keep it on my shelf because of that. I just have to save up for them.
Decision: Keep (I have the whole series on my shelf so this goes for all of the series)

It’s a Wonderful Death – Sara J. Schmitt
So many books I remember nothing about. I like the idea of this one, reliving past actions, a spunky narrator and a fight between an angel and Death itself. I have no idea when I will get to this one but I definitely keep it around.
Decision: Keep

The Great Apocalypse – Daniel Thompson
The summary is a ride. It has so much to it, too much. I got lost reading it.  Plus it doesn’t have the highest rating.
Decision: Remove

The Sky Drifter – Paris Singer
Why in the world would I add this one? I wonder if it was from a Giveaway. It has the most generic summary ever.
Decision: Remove

The Theta Prophecy – Chris Dietzel
There is time travel and it is dystopian! Some of my favorite things!
Decision: Keep

The Art of Being Normal – Lisa Williamson
I am torn on this one. I feel like it could be an interesting book dealing with an important topic. But the reviews from transgender reviewers have pointed out problematic elements. I think I need to do more research before I can make  a true decision on this one.
Decision- Undecided until more research can be done

Hell’s Gates – Mary Masters
I am confused about this one. The summary starts with “I was given this one through a Goodreads giveaway”, not sure why that is on the general summary. Either way it doesn’t hold any interest to me.
Decision: Remove

Dream Caster (Dream Cycle #1) – NR Nada
It is an alright premise but nothing that is calling out to me.
Decision: Remove

Kept: 3
Remove:6
Undecided: 1
Current TBR: 255

I think this is the most books I have removed doing one of these yet. What are your opinions on some the books I kept and removed?

Down the TBR Hole #6

Time again to see if I can pair down my TBR shelf a little bit.

Current TBR – 257

The Painted Lady – Joseph Faiank
This sounds kind of generic. One of those stories where a bad decision in the past comes back to haunt the main character. At the moment it doesn’t sound all that different or interesting.
Decision: Remove

The Dead Club – Manuel Ruiz
A story about Purgatory, the Grim Reaper, an Oracle and the Underworld? Yes, please!
Decision: Keep

This Shadow Follows Me – Jospeh McGinnis
I own this one. It does sound really powerful but also really difficult to read. I will read it one day but I have to be in the right mindset for it and just haven’t been there yet.
Decision: Keep

In Time Like These (In Time Like These #1) – Nathan Van Coops
This one is all about time travel. I adore time travel stories. I will definitely be getting to this one sooner or later.
Decision: Keep

Marking Time (The Immortal Descendants, #1)- April White
This one sounds fascinating. The idea of being a descendant of time and being able to travel through time. There is also some complicated love story and elements of Nature, Fate, War and Death. I am extremely intrigued by this one. I think it is one the next time I do a buying spree I’ll defiantly buy it!
Decision: Keep

Lost Angeles (Lost Angeles #1) -Lisa Mantchev
This is a paranormal romance, which I do enjoy. But this one sounds very generic and it surrounds a vampire. I am still tired of vampires.
Decision: Remove

Mandala Madness – Adult Coloring Book – Kymie Edwins
I added this after a giveaway. I do enjoy adult coloring books but there is no reason it needs to be on my TBR shelf.
Decision: Remove

Nation of Enemies – H.A. Raynes
This is a thriller and I will say that at the moment it doesn’t really hit me as something I want to read. Though the concept is one that seems like it may be something that has a lot of relevant thoughts for today’s society. I will keep it just because I do want to read it in the future.
Decision: Keep

Her Blackened Soul – Isra Sravenheart
This again sounds like it would be alright. It sounds a bit too out there with animals lovers or something. It isn’t pulling at my reading desires right now.
Decision: Remove

No True Echo – Gareth P. JonesNo True Echo – Gareth P. Jones
A story about being stuck in a time-loop, sounds good to me!
Decision: Keep

Kept: 6
Remove: 4
Current TBR Count: 254

Have you read any of the above books? What do you think of my choices for some of these?

Down the TBR Hole #4

Time for the fourth look through my TBR shelf! Isaw this tag on on Howling Libraries  It was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.

Timescape – Gregory Benfrod
I don’t remember where this one came from. I think this may be another book that was my dad’s. It seems like an interesting concept.
Decision: Keep

A Wrinkle in Time – Madeleine L’Engle
This is one of those books I have always wanted to read. I know I have it on my physical shelf so I will get to it before the summer for sure!
Decision: Keep

The Tomb of Hercules – Andy McDermott
I bought this one a long time ago. I love this adventure stories where they are looking for some object that is from legends. This still sounds interesting so I will remember it.
Decisions: Keep

Prodigal Son – Dean Koontz
I heard about this a while back. I have also read a lot of mixed reviews about this one. I haven’t found myself ever thinking about it recently so I am just going to take all of them off the list.
Decision: Remove

259800151poC-iABzL._SX308_BO1,204,203,200_-2921474111304

Iron Angel – Alan Campell
I have this one on my physical shelves as well. I keep seeing it and the summary is interesting. I like the idea of the angels and demons.
Decision: Keep

Emperor (Time’s Tapestry #1) – Stephen Baxter
I have zero recollection of this one. Plot seems basic and not all that interesting.
Decision: Remove

Map of Bones and Black Order – James Rollins
I put these together because they are the same series and same author. I adore James Rollins Sigma Force series. There are the first two. I started the series part way through, for whatever reason. So one day I will go back and read these.
Decision: Keep

Fear Nothing – Dean Koontz
Again a book I know I own. Though the plot doesn’t sound interesting anymore. I’ll have to take it off my regular shelf too (more room for other books!)
Decision: Remove

4643841DvyInpLaL._SX316_BO1,204,203,200_

The Last Templar – Raymond Khoury
I believe my mom read this and highly recommended it. I still like the adventure plot line.
Decision: Keep

The Picture of Dorian Gray – Oscar Wilde
I have meant to read this for ages. I have tried countless times. I just don’t think it is ever going to happen.
Decision: Remove

Removed: 4
Kept: 6
Current TBR – 244 (this number doesn’t quite reflect the above numbers because I removed all the Frankenstein series books, I had a few of the series listed)

Down the TBR Hole #3

Time for the third trip through my TBR shelf! Isaw this tag on on Howling Libraries  It was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books

  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current TBR – 246

109648667848658942184136

Outlander (Outlander #1) – Diana Gabaldon – Date added: May 19th – 2014
I have heard so many things about this series. I am interested in it, but it seems like a long series. I have to wait until I am in the place to go through a longer series.(I have multiple parts of this series on my To- Read shelf. I am going to include them all in this one, instead of doing them all separate).

Decision – Keep

A Discovery of Witches – Deborah Harkness – Date added: May 19th, 2014
My mom just recently finished this book and she liked it but wasn’t thrilled. I still want to read it eventually but I think it will stay on the list for a much later time.(I have all three books in the series on my list so again I am just going to put them all into this one decision).

Decision: Keep

Guardian (Eyes of the Republic #2) – Claire Delacroix – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I remember reading the first book in this series a long time ago. I do remember enjoying it. I think when I get back into the mood for some paranormal romance I will go back to these.

Decision: Keep

Fantasy Lover (Hunter Legends Sereis #1) – Sherrilyn Kenyon – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I read part of another series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and I remember really enjoying it. I actually think I have most of that series but never finished it. I sort of got tired of the paranormal romance genre but I will go back to these one day I am sure.

Decision: Keep

69440323868437980773322320

Night Pleasures (Dark-Hunter #1) – Sherrilyn Kenyon – Date added: January 17th, 2015
Another series that sounds interesting. Maybe one day I’ll just go on a binge of all of these. (Though there are like 14 of them or more so we shall see if that actually happens).

Decision: Keep

Dogs and Goddesses – Jennifer Cruise – Date added: January 17th, 2015
My mom read this one and she really enjoyed it. I definitely want to get to this one soon.

Decision: Keep

One Year Gone (Supernatural #7) – Rebecca Dessertine – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I was obsessed with Supernatural at one point. I read most of the books but then got bored of them. I still watch the show but don’t think I have any desire to go back to the books.

Decision: Remove

Pattern Recognition (Blue Ant, #1) – William Gibson – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I believe I have this book on my shelf. I know I have read other books by this author before and remember liking them. Now that I see this I want to go back to it and see if it lives up to what I remember.

Decision: Keep

100926081k4NbquV+L

The Xeno Solution – Nelson Erlick – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I have had this book on my shelf for ages. I haven’t even thought about picking it up. I think it is time to just realize this one holds no interest for me.

Decision: Remove

Fall Back – Peter Niesewand – Date added: 17th, 2015
So this is on my list because it was a book my dad owned. I don’t think I will ever actually read it but I will keep the physical book because it was his.

Decision: Remove

Percentage Removed: 30%

Many of these were part of a series so I technically went through a lot more than 10 books on my shelf. Didn’t remove much but did remind myself of some fun books that I might pick up soon.

What are your thoughts on any of these? Do you agree or disagree with my decisions?
