The End of Evil Queen’s Storyline – Once Upon a Time (6×14) (Spoilers)

images-3The Evil Queen storyline has finally come to a conclusion and I am hoping this will give the show an opportunity to branch out and try to tell some new, fresh stories. While the Evil Queen story ended, the circle of issues with Hook and Emma is still spinning.

The episode opened in the past with The Evil Queen yet again looking for Snow. As she is threatening the village, Tinker Bell, comes in and tells them that she is to blame for the way the villagers are being treated. She reveals that Regina walked away from love and that made her bitter and angry. Regina denies it all, trying to make it seem like she cares about her people.

In the present The Evil Queen and Robin are bonding. They both realize that they do not belong in the mortal world. Both of them don’t belong in a place where things are calm and selfless. They both have hard and difficult personalities and need somewhere that works with that. Robin reveals that he wants to return to his world, he wants to be back in a world he understands and can work with. The Evil Queen agrees to help him if he helps her.

We then hop back to the past and we learn that Regina’s father is desperate to help her find true love. He tricks her, making her think he is going to help her find Snow White. In reality he brings her to cupid’s arrows. He tells her that she deserves love and he wants her to be happy. Regina lashes out, angry that she was tricked. At that time she thinks she has what she wants, revenge.

Regina takes the arrows and reworks them to show her who she hates. She believes it will take her straight to Snow, when it instead it shows her, her own image. This isn’t new information for us. We know that Regina spent much of her past pretending that she was happy with her revenge plot. We know that she thought that killing Snow would solve all her issues.

We also know that she learned that love is what she was missing. Past Regina didn’t want to admit that she had lost an essential part of herself. This whole series has been about Regina taking a step back and learning what she really deserves and that is a second chance at love.

In the present Regina faces off against her evil half. She is set on destroying her for good. She wants to be done with this whole thing. They fight and in the end Regina takes her heart and combines it with The Evil Queen’s. She forces light into her darkness, while also darkening her own heart again.

This was the end that I assumed we were heading too since this all started last season. Regina was dead set on pushing all the dark out of her life while The Evil Queen was set on destroying all the light in hers. They both learn in this episode that there has too be a balance between the two forces. Light and dark do not exist without each other.

Once The Evil Queen’s heart is lightened she is no longer interested in destroying Regina. She wants to make amends and then start over again. Regina helps her go to a fresh start, which includes Robin.

I found this part interesting. I had a feeling at the start of this episode that Wish Realm Robin was in fact Evil Queen’s true love and not our Regina’s true love. I liked that The Evil Queen got to live out what she denied herself. Wish Realm Robin is a bit selfish and hard, same as The Evil Queen. In the end part of Regina got the true love she deserved.

While Regina was tying up her storyline, Emma was destroying hers. Hook is feeling guilty for not telling Emma about what he did to Charming’s father. He goes to Captain Nemo for advice. Nemo gives him two options. He can either forgive himself and let it all go or he can tell Emma and ask for forgiveness.

I personally thought he should find a way to forgive himself and move on. We know Hook had a dark past, everyone knows this. Hook made poor choices and he hurt others. That was past Hook, everyone knows he had things he did that some may know and others may not know. Revealing this transgression does no one any good. It just picks at a scabbed wound, a wound that will never fully heal. I thought he should just put it behind him and let it go.

Of course, Hook does not do any of the above options. He instead attempts to burn the dream catcher with the memory. Emma catches him and she lashes out on him. She breaks down, telling him that he should have been able to trust her. She accuse him of keeping secrets and not being open and honest about everything. She turns it all on its head and makes it about her.

This whole thing drove me crazy. Hook tries to explain to Emma that he wasn’t trying to hide it from her because he didn’t trust her. He just couldn’t live looking at her parents knowing what he did. Instead of listening and trying to understand how he is feeling, she just makes it all about her. I wish she had just listened to him. Understood that his past was yet again hurting him. In the end she gave him back the ring, telling him they needed to find a way to connect again.

images-4Hook is heart-broken, believing the this past has done what he always feared it would do; taken away the one woman he loved. Hook debates leaving with Captain Nemo, going on a journey of self-discovery; but he after talking with Snow he decides he is not running away. Of course, Gideon has to throw a wrench into the idea.

Before Hook can get off the submarine, Gideon launches it and forces Hook to leave. Emma thinks he has left her and is in the process of believing their relationship is over.

Next week it looks like the story is going to be the “I have to move on,” storyline, which I am going to hate. This is committing one of my most hated story crimes. Emma and Hook have literally gone to hell and died for each other. Emma should know that Hook wouldn’t walk away from her without a fight. She should know that he has his demons but he fights them. It is going to be frustrating watching her act like she has no idea who the man she claims to love is.

I am hoping this will have a quick resolution. I don’t think I am going to be able to take watching this back and forth stuff for too long. I am hoping a dramatic event will put things back to where they need to be and things will be alright again for these two.

Quotes:
“Guilt can be as corrosive to the soul as revenge.” – Captain Nemo – Guilt is always going to be apart of Hook’s life. Emma needs to learn to listen to him and help him ease this guilt once in a while instead of fighting him about it all the time.

Questions:
What is Gideon’s plan?
How will Hook get off the submarine?
Where is Nemo going?
Why are Jasmine and Aladdin on the submarine?
Is Gideon going after Emma again?
What happened to The Land of Lost Stories characters?
Can Emma learn to help and listen to Hook?
When will they be able to lift the sleeping curse?

What Rumple Really Cares About – Once Upon a Time Review (6×13) (Spoilers)

Once-Upon-a-Time-6x13-Ill-Boding-Patterns-Rumplestiltskin-and-young-Baelfire-720x480Rumple is a complicated character. He is one of those characters that I think I make up my mind about but then he goes and completely changes my opinion of him. I want to dislike him. I want to see him as an enemy but he is too complicated for that. This episode showed us what Rumple cares about in his life, his sons.

The episode opened with Beowulf fighting in the ogre war. ( I thought it was a bit odd to make him the character in this story; mostly because he is a character from an ancient story. I just felt like it didn’t quite fit.) Beowulf believes the sword he has will make him a hero and win the ogre war. In the end it is Rumple who kills the ogres and wins the war.

Beowulf is upset and interrupts the celebration of the end of the war and Rumple’s work by telling everyone that Rumple is the Dark One. He is trying to make the village distrust and hate him and it works. They begin to fear him and even start attacking Baelfire. Baelfire asks that Rumple give up the dagger and the power. He wants their life to go back to normal. Rumple can’t let go of the power.

As they are arguing about the power issue a set of villagers come looking for Rumple’s help. They have a monster attacking their village. Baelfire thinks this would be a perfect time to prove that he can defeat the threat without the magic. But once they get there they find out that Beowulf is the one who set the whole thing up. He has been killing people and he wants to frame Rumple. He thinks that by “catching,” The Dark One, he will be the hero.

Beowulf attack Baelfire and forces him to use the dagger to save them. Rumple ends up killing Beowulf because Baelfire forces him too. Baelfire feels the pull of the power and he starts to think like Rumple. This scares Rumple and Rumple choose to erase Baelfire’s memories and to help keep him from becoming dark like Rumple was becoming.

Back in the present Rumple has to yet agains save his son. Gideon is intent on killing Emma. He thinks that the only way to save his people is to kill Emma, become a Savior and kill the Black Fairy. To do this he needs the sword and the only way to put it back together is by draining The Blue Fairy of her magic. He is not willing to listen to Rumple. He sees it as his only option and he is willing to do whatever to get what he wants.

Rumple will again not watch his son darken his heart. He steps up and does the deed himself. He drains The Blue Fairy, darkening his heart just a bit more. And it was in this moment that we saw Rumple’s true character.

For the longest time I thought Rumple cared about power and power only. I didn’t think there was anything or anyone who he would give up his power for. I didn’t think there was anyone he cared enough about to change his life or his ways. In this episode we saw that he will do anything to help his son. His son is what matters to him and he will not let him travel the same path he has traveled.

It has been said many times that parents want a better life for their children. A life that they could not have or a life that does not make the same mistakes that they have made themselves. Rumple is that parent. Rumple has doomed himself, he knows that. He knows there is no saving him. He knows that darkness will always be a part of who he is. He knows that he will be the person who always makes the wrong choices.

Rumple has resigned himself to who he is but he will not let his son do the same. Gideon is not a evil person. He had a rough childhood. He suffered through quite a bit as a child. He is angry and scared but he is not evil and that is what Rumple will not let change. Rumple knows what it means to give yourself up to evil and he has done and will do all he can to save his children.

145552_1093The other main storyline of this episode was between Robin, Regina and Zelena. We learn that Robin stole the magic box in order to get make a spell to get himself out of Storybrooke. Robin is tried of being compared to someone he isn’t. He wants to start fresh and he wants to go off on his own. Regina is upset but she promises to let him go.

Regina knows that Robin is not the man she loved. The two Robin’s did not live through the same experiences which means they are different people. She knows that she made a choice to bring him to the real world and she has accepted that she needs to let him go.

Right at the end of the episode we see that The Evil Queen is back. She is set on helping Robin get what he wants if he helps her. It will be interesting to see how she manipulates him and his connection to Regina to get what she wants, whatever that may be.

Quotes:

“Giving into darkness only leads to heartbreak.” – Rumple – Rumple gave into darkness because he thought he had no choice. He was scared and he made a quick decision. He will not let his son do the same.

What does The Evil Queen want?

Will Hook tell Emma the truth?

Sometimes You Have to Let Go of What You Once Thought – Once upon a Time (6×12)Review

Once-Upon-a-Time-6x12-Murder-Most-Foul-David-in-the-docks-720x480You can get a thought about someone in your head and it can be almost impossible to accept who they truly are or were. In this episode Charming learns how his father really died and Regina finds out that Robin may not be who she wants him to be.

This episode opened with Charming and James’s parents in dire straits. Their children are sick but they cannot afford the medication to save them. Rumple appears and offers them a deal. They can have the medication to save the boys but they have to give up one of their babies. They are hesitant at first but realize it is the only way to save their children. They toss a coin and James is chosen to go live with the king and become a prince while David (Charming) gets to stay with his parents.

We jump ahead six years and find Robert drowning his sorrows in drink. He cannot accept that he was not able to save his children. He has been drinking to quiet the guilt he feels at losing James. So when the king comes into a tavern and announce that James has been kidnapped Robert decides he is going to prove his is a good father and find his son.

In the present Charming is being plagued with visions of his ghost father, imploring him to find out the truth about his death. Charming can’t focus on anything else. He is determined to find out what happened, to find out if his father was really the drunk he always thought he was.

What Charming finds out is that his long held belief about his father is wrong. Robert finds James and tries to save him but is unable to keep him from the king. King George sentences him to death, telling his guards to make it look like an accident.

Charming is hit by a sudden realization that what he has always thought his father is wrong. Robert wasn’t just a man who gave up on his family. He is man who wanted nothing more than to save his boys. He defined himself as a father and when he failed at that, he had no idea how else to frame himself.

Charming learns that sometimes what you think is not true. Sometimes you get only pieces of the information and the picture you create is not always real. Regina seems to also be learning this lesson.

Once Upon a Time - Episode 6.12 - Murder Most FoulRegina brought Robin back from the Wish Realm with the firm belief that her Robin was present inside him somewhere. She has this image of who he should be in her head. What she doesn’t realize is that he has lived a very different life than her Robin. He is not the same man.  He has not gone through the same trials and tribulations. He has been shaped differently making them different people.

Regina is coming to terms with the idea that the man she brought back may not be who she wants him to be. The question now is going to be can she accept who is and try to build a relationship from there? Or is she going to push him away?

I think right now she is suspicious of him. She doesn’t know what he wants or what drives him and that makes her nervous. She is used to having control and knowing what the people around her want. To have a man she used to know everything about being a complete mystery to her is going to throw her off for a while.

At the end of the episode we learn that Hook is actually the one who ended up killing Charming’s father. It was when he was at his most ruthless and did not care for anyone or anything. In this episode we learned that he was planning on proposing to Emma.

But this revelation is throwing him off. Hook knows he has changed but he is unsure of what the rest of the world believes. He wants to prove that he is a different man but his past keeps coming back to haunt him. The question is going to be can he reveal what he did, can everyone accept him as this new man and move past this? Or is this going to destroy everything he has built?

Quotes:

“Family is everything.” – Robert – Robert defined himself by his family. When he thought he had failed them he nearly gave up on life. He ended dying trying to protect his family. In this show everything revolves around family and that intense bond that families create with each other.

“Small things can hold great power.” – Rumple – Rumple took one of Robert’s hair, though we aren’t sure why. Is he going to use it for a spell later and are we going to see the consequence of that action this season?

Questions:

Will Hook tell Charming what he did to his father?

Will Hook be able to move past this and ask Emma to marry him?

What did Robin want with the box in Regina’s vault?

What does Robin want?

Will Zelena do something to Robin to keep him from her daughter?

When will Aladdin and Jasmine come back?

Why does Gideon want to be a Savior?

Can Rumple and Belle save Gideon?

Will the Evil Queen come back?

How will any of this play into the Agrabbah storyline?

Are we done with The Land of Lost Stories?

What did Rumple do with Robert’s hair?

True Love is Not Always Enough – Once Upon a Time (5×21) – Review- Spoilers

blog-81b15014-676f-4122-94c7-1726fb3e8c6f_5760x3840In this episode, we got to see the end of Hades and we also learned just what kind of man he was, while this battle yet again destroyed Regina’s happiness. Zelena also had to make a difficult choice between her sister and Hades.

The episode started with everyone arriving back in Storybrooke. It becomes their mission to find and defeat Hades. They all know now that Hades cannot be trusted and he has not changed. They do not have time to let Zelena try to change him. He does not trust them and they do not trust him.

Regina tries to explain to Zelena what happened with Hades but Zelena does not want to hear it. All Zelena can hear is that Regina wants to destroy the man she loves. She sees Regina not trusting her. Zelena is upset that yet again no one is on her side. They are all fighting against her and she cannot deal with that.

Zelena tells Hades about how everyone is after them and she suggests just running away. Zelena just wants to be happy with her love and her daughter. That is all that matters to Zelena anymore. This sets up the key difference between Zelena and Hades’s characters.

Zelena would be satisfied with a calm life living in the woods somewhere with just Hades and her daughter. Revenge and taking out their enemies does not matter to her anymore. All that matters is having the two people she cares most about in her life at her side. She no longer wants to hurt Regina or anyone else. Fighting is not on her radar.

Hades is the opposite. Hades will not be happy just living off the grid somewhere. He will not be happy without having everyone under his control. He wanted out of The Underworld in order to rule a greater kingdom. What is important to him is power and control.

Hades and Zelena parallel Rumple and Belle. I do not doubt that both Rumple and Hades love Belle and Zelena. That love is true but that love is not enough. Both Hades and Rumple cannot deal with others being in control of their lives. They cannot let anyone else have power over them. Rumple has to be The Dark One and Hades needs to have the Olympian crystal. With these powers, they are tough to fight and defeat. They believe they are safe because they are the strongest ones around.

While Belle and Zelena want to just live their lives. They do not want to fight. They do not care about power or control. They want to live calmly with their loves and families. In the end, neither can change the men they love. Rumple will always need the power as does Hades.

Zelena was faced with a choice in this episode. She had to choose between her sister and Hades. Hades wanted Zelena to kill Regina in order to eliminate her as a threat. Zelena could not kill her sister. Her sister loves her and does not want to change her anymore. Hades could not live the life that Zelena wanted. He would always want to hurt others and take out Regina. Zelena realized that she could not change this side of him. I think once Belle wakes up she will make the same realization.

There is an issue I had though with this episode and Hades’s character. In all the other storylines the adversary gets an extensive backstory. We see why they became who they were and what caused them to be full of anger and resentment. We got hints at Hades’s story in this second half of the season but nothing extensive which disappointed me. I wanted a flashback to why Zeus cursed Hades.

I wanted to see who Hades was before the curse. I think it would have given me a better way to relate to him. For the Once Upon a Time X Challenge, I am going to write a more extensive post about the use of fairy tales and mythology in this show so I will go into more detail there about the potential that was not realized with Hades character.

images-3In the end, Regina lost Robin in this episode. In the previews for next week, she asks Emma if she is worried that the Evil Queen will come back. I am not sure how I want this to play out.

On one hand the last thing I want is for Regina to backslide. Her character has been written so well. She has the best arc in this series. We understand her so well and all her choices make sense. So having her revert to her old ways out of grief and anger would seem to cheapen her journey. She has dealt with grief before and she should be able to find a way to deal without trying to destroy everyone.

On the other hand, I would not blame her for lashing out. She cannot catch a break and it is getting a bit annoying. There is only so much one person can take. Regina has been through so much and overcome so much. Every time things get close to things being good for her the rug is ripped out from under her feet. I can see her resenting Emma because Emma got Hook back and again not sure I can blame her. I think Regina is strong enough to fight her grief and not fall into that dark place but I would not be surprised if she is angry and resentful for a while.

Quotes:

“Sometimes the truth really hurts,” – Regina- Zelena learned that her love was not enough for Hades. Regina learned that the universe does not want her to be happy.

“Our future is not determined by our past,” – Robin – Robin gave Regina a chance and saw her change. Regina is a new person but her past still haunts her and it may be something she can’t ever fully escape.

“Only way to be safe it be strong,” – Hades- For Hades strength was one of the main things that mattered. Love was not enough. In the end strength was not enough to save him.

Questions:
What will Rumple do with the piece of crystal?
Will Belle’s father really leave her asleep?
Is there another way to wake Belle?
How will Regina handle Robin’s death?
Will Regina come to resent Emma because she got Hook back?
What will the new threat be?
Will Zelena be a deciding factor in Regina not reverting to her old ways?
