Down the TBR Hole #9

It has been about a month since I’ve done one of these posts so I decided to jump back into my TBR shelf and see what can come off. This is a handy thing to do since I have a tendency to continuously add to this list, so taking off some is not a bad thing!

This was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.
Links will be  on the titles for the books Goodreads page. (I am going to do ten for this round of this tag).

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next time!

Current TBR: 252

The Children’s Home – Charles Lambert
The summary tells me very little. It also barely has 2 stars on Goodreads which is a bit disconcerting. I don’t find myself wanting to run out and get this one, so it’ll go for now.
Decision: Remove

Ren: The Man Behind the Monster (Book #1) – Sarah Noffke
I like the idea of someone realizing that having too much power has corrupted them. I am curious how this one explores the idea of someone understanding they are a monster and fixing that side of them.
Decision: Keep

Soul’s Asylum: The Parasite Lives – Derek E. Pearson
Holy crap there are at least 4 plot lines in the summary alone. Aliens, telepaths, an epidemic and a murder mystery. I am already too overwhelmed.
Decision: Remove

How to Suppress Women’s Writing – Joanna Russ
Exploring the the barriers that are in place for women and minorities in the art world? I am all for that.
Decision: Keep

Envious – Katie Keller-Nieman
Sound alright but nothing new or exciting.
Decision: Remove

Riders (Riders #1) – Veronica Rossi
Someone dies and becomes one of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Yes, please!
Decision: Keep

Figment (Insanity #2) – Cameron Jace
Why do I have the second in a series on my list without the first? I mean I like the idea of Alice in our world but I’m gonna have to read the first book then decide if I go onto the second.
Decision: Remove

Time on Her Hands (The Lineage 3) – Melissa Jarvis
Again somehow ended up adding the third book in a series. I have to stop doing that!
Decision: Remove

The Rook (The Checquy Files #1) – Daniel O’Malley
A mystery with a number of elements, sounds interesting.
Decision: Keep

Breeder (Arrow’s Flight #1) – Casey Hays
Not sure I like the idea of someone being forced to breed and then fighting that, especially since the summary sounds like there is a lot of harsh punishments involved.
Decision: Remove

Kept: 4
Removed: 6
Current TBR – 243 (Again found a few books that I have read and thought were on my “Read” list but somehow weren’t. This is a good exercise for finding the glitches on the shelf too)

Have you read any of these? What are your thoughts on what I decided to keep versus get rid of?

Down the TBR Hole #7

I thought it was time to go through my TBR shelf on Goodreads again and see what needs to be taken out. The list has grown quite a bit because for June one of my favorite authors was recommending new books every day and I just kept adding more and more to my list. So let’s see if we can take some others off to balance things out!

This was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.

Current TBR 261

The Calling (Gateway #1) – Louise G. White
I have no idea why this one was added. It sound pretty generic and doesn’t strike me as interesting.
Decision: Remove

The Weeping Books of Blimney lane – Drea Damara
Again don’t remember adding this one. Sounds alright but again not really striking me as one that is going to end up on my bookshelf anytime soon.
Decision: Remove

The Sandman Comics – Neil Gaiman
I read the first/prologue of this series and really enjoyed it. I have heard how great it is and I really want to finish it. The issue is the all the books are pretty expensive. I will finish it one day and I am going to keep it on my shelf because of that. I just have to save up for them.
Decision: Keep (I have the whole series on my shelf so this goes for all of the series)

It’s a Wonderful Death – Sara J. Schmitt
So many books I remember nothing about. I like the idea of this one, reliving past actions, a spunky narrator and a fight between an angel and Death itself. I have no idea when I will get to this one but I definitely keep it around.
Decision: Keep

The Great Apocalypse – Daniel Thompson
The summary is a ride. It has so much to it, too much. I got lost reading it.  Plus it doesn’t have the highest rating.
Decision: Remove

The Sky Drifter – Paris Singer
Why in the world would I add this one? I wonder if it was from a Giveaway. It has the most generic summary ever.
Decision: Remove

The Theta Prophecy – Chris Dietzel
There is time travel and it is dystopian! Some of my favorite things!
Decision: Keep

The Art of Being Normal – Lisa Williamson
I am torn on this one. I feel like it could be an interesting book dealing with an important topic. But the reviews from transgender reviewers have pointed out problematic elements. I think I need to do more research before I can make  a true decision on this one.
Decision- Undecided until more research can be done

Hell’s Gates – Mary Masters
I am confused about this one. The summary starts with “I was given this one through a Goodreads giveaway”, not sure why that is on the general summary. Either way it doesn’t hold any interest to me.
Decision: Remove

Dream Caster (Dream Cycle #1) – NR Nada
It is an alright premise but nothing that is calling out to me.
Decision: Remove

Kept: 3
Remove:6
Undecided: 1
Current TBR: 255

I think this is the most books I have removed doing one of these yet. What are your opinions on some the books I kept and removed?

Down the TBR Hole #6

Time again to see if I can pair down my TBR shelf a little bit.

Current TBR – 257

The Painted Lady – Joseph Faiank
This sounds kind of generic. One of those stories where a bad decision in the past comes back to haunt the main character. At the moment it doesn’t sound all that different or interesting.
Decision: Remove

The Dead Club – Manuel Ruiz
A story about Purgatory, the Grim Reaper, an Oracle and the Underworld? Yes, please!
Decision: Keep

This Shadow Follows Me – Jospeh McGinnis
I own this one. It does sound really powerful but also really difficult to read. I will read it one day but I have to be in the right mindset for it and just haven’t been there yet.
Decision: Keep

In Time Like These (In Time Like These #1) – Nathan Van Coops
This one is all about time travel. I adore time travel stories. I will definitely be getting to this one sooner or later.
Decision: Keep

Marking Time (The Immortal Descendants, #1)- April White
This one sounds fascinating. The idea of being a descendant of time and being able to travel through time. There is also some complicated love story and elements of Nature, Fate, War and Death. I am extremely intrigued by this one. I think it is one the next time I do a buying spree I’ll defiantly buy it!
Decision: Keep

Lost Angeles (Lost Angeles #1) -Lisa Mantchev
This is a paranormal romance, which I do enjoy. But this one sounds very generic and it surrounds a vampire. I am still tired of vampires.
Decision: Remove

Mandala Madness – Adult Coloring Book – Kymie Edwins
I added this after a giveaway. I do enjoy adult coloring books but there is no reason it needs to be on my TBR shelf.
Decision: Remove

Nation of Enemies – H.A. Raynes
This is a thriller and I will say that at the moment it doesn’t really hit me as something I want to read. Though the concept is one that seems like it may be something that has a lot of relevant thoughts for today’s society. I will keep it just because I do want to read it in the future.
Decision: Keep

Her Blackened Soul – Isra Sravenheart
This again sounds like it would be alright. It sounds a bit too out there with animals lovers or something. It isn’t pulling at my reading desires right now.
Decision: Remove

No True Echo – Gareth P. JonesNo True Echo – Gareth P. Jones
A story about being stuck in a time-loop, sounds good to me!
Decision: Keep

Kept: 6
Remove: 4
Current TBR Count: 254

Have you read any of the above books? What do you think of my choices for some of these?

How Well Does Goodreads Know Me?

I saw this over on Never Not Reading. I have never actually used the Goodreads recommendation feature. I usually just add books from blog posts, Booktube recommendations or what I see my friends reading on Facebook. I am curious how close this will be to what I would really enjoy reading.

The idea is to go to the Goodreads recommendation page and see if you agree with what they recommend. Mine is broken up based off the different shelves I have on my Goodreads profile so I will go through the first three for each shelf and see if I agree or not. I will either decide on “What to read” or “Not Interested.”

First three are based off my “To Read Shelf” which is pretty vague Goodreads. I mean my shelf has a number of different types of books on it but we will see what you think should be added.

61i58xDQ3YL._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) – Amie Kaufman – Based off my adding A Gathering of Shadows by Victoria Schwab

I have actually heard great things about this one. I know it has a unique story telling formant, using “found” files from this invasion. I am curious about it. I haven’t had the desire to exactly pick it up yet but I do think I will want to read it sooner or later.

Decision: Want to Read

51S-OSUUyzL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)- Tahereh Mafi – Based off my adding Cinder by Marissa Meyer
I have not heard of this series yet. It sounds alright, though nothing too exciting or out of the ordinary. I think this would have appealed to me more when I was in my dystopian phase. I still enjoy those kinds of stories but I haven’t been in the mood for one in a while.

Decision: Not Interested

61XfS2XCw3L._SX345_BO1,204,203,200_The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth #1) – N.K. Jemisin – Based of my adding A Gathering of ShadowsVictoria Schwab (Glancing through the recommendations on this shelf it seems to use either A Gathering of Shadows or Cinder, which is interesting since neither are on my “To Read” shelf anymore. I have hundreds on that shelf and yet these are the two books repeatedly used to make recommendations).

The book itself sounds alright but again it is dystopian. It seems to take place in a completely fictional world and nothing popped out as making me want to read it now. It seems pretty simple, mother wanting revenge for her murdered husband and to get her kids back. Doesn’t jump out to me as something to read anytime soon.

Decision: Not Interested

Next up books on my Paranormal Romance Shelf. I mainly have this shelf for the Gena Showalter books I read but I do have a few outside of her series that I enjoy. I am curious if Goodreads can get me interested in a new series.

51ReKfqa1fL._SX304_BO1,204,203,200_First Grave on the Right – Charley Davidson #1 – Darynda Jones – Because I added Darkest Promise By Gena Showalter
The summary of it is extremely intriguing. I like the twist of grim reapers and other “entities.” I don’t think I would have picked this up in the store because the cover doesn’t look all that interesting but I do think I will have to add this to my “To-Read” shelf. I am all for some romance between grim reapers!

Decision: Want to Read

42899Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) – J.R. Ward – Because I added Darkest Promise by Gena Showalter

The main focus of this one is vampires and I am honestly not interested in vampires anymore. I have watched enough tv shows and read enough about vampires for a while.

Decision: Not Interested

2355575Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega, #1) – Patricia Briggs – Because I added Darkest Promise by Gena Showalter

This one is all about werewolves and again that is at topic I am tired of. I have read enough about vampires and werewolves. Nothing about it appeals to me at the moment.

Decision: Not Interested

The next ones come from my additions to my “Fantasy” Shelf.

244572Charmed Life (Chrestomanci, #1) – Diana Wynne Jones – Because I added Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus, #1)

Honestly the summary could not get more generic. Girls are orphaned, end up in a castle of witches, get upset and change things. Nothing about this sounds interesting or different to me. Just sounds like a very generic tale and doesn’t hold any appeal to me.

Decision: Not Interested

18667112The Copper Promise (The Copper Cat, #1) – Jen Williams  – Because I added A Gathering of Shadows by Victoria Schwab. (Is this the only book that Goodreads knows how to use to make recommendations?)

I am torn on this one. It sounds like a fun adventure but it also doesn’t sound like it has anything different to offer. Part of it sounds like these are some type of anti-heroes which  intrigues me. I may add it for now and see what I feel like down the road.

Decision: Want to Read (For Now)

18670336Fallen – Traci L. Siatton – Because I added The Refelections of Queen Snow White by David Meredith

I like the idea of an apocalyptic Earth where people have psychic abilities. I also am intrigued by the whole “when their love it at its sweetest moment” something horrible happens idea. I am not sure I will rush out to read this one but I wouldn’t say no in the future.

Decision: Want to Read

I am going to stop this post here. I have about 5 more shelves so I think I will make this into a few parts so it doesn’t get too long. As I wrote this I thought it was funny how this post is basically undoing the work I am doing with my “Down the TBR Hole” posts. I am taking books of my TBR there and adding them with this one.

Anyway I think the recommendations were decent. I do think more books could have been used to create the recommendations. I felt like only four or so books were used when I have a good amount on each shelf. I didn’t see anything that was blatantly wrong which was nice.

What are your thoughts on the books I chose to read versus the one I choose to mark as
Not Interested in?

Down the TBR Hole #3

Time for the third trip through my TBR shelf! Isaw this tag on on Howling Libraries  It was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.

  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next week!

Current TBR – 246

109648667848658942184136

Outlander (Outlander #1) – Diana Gabaldon – Date added: May 19th – 2014
I have heard so many things about this series. I am interested in it, but it seems like a long series. I have to wait until I am in the place to go through a longer series.(I have multiple parts of this series on my To- Read shelf. I am going to include them all in this one, instead of doing them all separate).

Decision – Keep

A Discovery of Witches – Deborah Harkness – Date added: May 19th, 2014
My mom just recently finished this book and she liked it but wasn’t thrilled. I still want to read it eventually but I think it will stay on the list for a much later time.(I have all three books in the series on my list so again I am just going to put them all into this one decision).

Decision: Keep

Guardian (Eyes of the Republic #2) – Claire Delacroix – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I remember reading the first book in this series a long time ago. I do remember enjoying it. I think when I get back into the mood for some paranormal romance I will go back to these.

Decision: Keep

Fantasy Lover (Hunter Legends Sereis #1) – Sherrilyn Kenyon – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I read part of another series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and I remember really enjoying it. I actually think I have most of that series but never finished it. I sort of got tired of the paranormal romance genre but I will go back to these one day I am sure.

Decision: Keep

69440323868437980773322320

Night Pleasures (Dark-Hunter #1) – Sherrilyn Kenyon – Date added: January 17th, 2015
Another series that sounds interesting. Maybe one day I’ll just go on a binge of all of these. (Though there are like 14 of them or more so we shall see if that actually happens).

Decision: Keep

Dogs and Goddesses – Jennifer Cruise – Date added: January 17th, 2015
My mom read this one and she really enjoyed it. I definitely want to get to this one soon.

Decision: Keep

One Year Gone (Supernatural #7) – Rebecca Dessertine – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I was obsessed with Supernatural at one point. I read most of the books but then got bored of them. I still watch the show but don’t think I have any desire to go back to the books.

Decision: Remove

Pattern Recognition (Blue Ant, #1) – William Gibson – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I believe I have this book on my shelf. I know I have read other books by this author before and remember liking them. Now that I see this I want to go back to it and see if it lives up to what I remember.

Decision: Keep

100926081k4NbquV+L

The Xeno Solution – Nelson Erlick – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I have had this book on my shelf for ages. I haven’t even thought about picking it up. I think it is time to just realize this one holds no interest for me.

Decision: Remove

Fall Back – Peter Niesewand – Date added: 17th, 2015
So this is on my list because it was a book my dad owned. I don’t think I will ever actually read it but I will keep the physical book because it was his.

Decision: Remove

Percentage Removed: 30%

Many of these were part of a series so I technically went through a lot more than 10 books on my shelf. Didn’t remove much but did remind myself of some fun books that I might pick up soon.

What are your thoughts on any of these? Do you agree or disagree with my decisions?
