Down the TBR Hole #11

Life is a bit insane right now, so posts are going to be infrequent for a minute. I thought it was time for another trip through my TBR shelf. Should be interesting this time because my birthday is in a week, so I am going to be taking notes for my usual bookshop buying trip!

This was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.
Links will be  on the titles for the books Goodreads page. (I am going to do ten for this round of this tag).

It works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 or 15 or 20, if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
  • Keep track of where you left off so you can pick up there next time!

TBR Total – 247

Attrition of the Gods – P.G. Burns – Vague but still interesting. I like the idea of a force influencing all major things throughout time.
Decision:Keep

The Wrath and the Dawn – Renee Ahdieh – I have this book on my physical shelf. I want to read it because it sound interesting but I also am trying to not get into series at the moment. I am one of those people who has to finish a series once I start and I haven’t wanted to dedicate the time to a whole series yet.
Decision: Keep

The Achieved (The Archived #1) – Victoria Schwab – Another one I really want to read but again don’t have the time to get into a whole series but I do think I am going to read this one soon.
Decision: Keep

Broken Fate (Threads of the Moirae, #1) – Teenage Fates from mythology, I love the idea.
Decision: Keep

The Night Watch (Watch #1) – Sergei Lukyanenko – Sounds alright but generic, nothing is standing out as unique.
Decision: Remove

The King Must Die (Theseus #1) – Mary Renault – Sounds alright but hard to discern if it is supposed to be factual or fiction.
Decision: Remove

Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops – Jen Campbell – This sounds fun.
Decision: Keep

Forget Tomorrow (Forget Tomorrow #1) – Pintip Dunn – Sounds like a YA version of Minority Report. I loved that movie so I am curious how this will be.
Decision: Keep

The Thirteenth Tale– Diane Setterfield  – I got this book at a bookshop. I will pick it up someday soon.
Decision: Keep

How They Met, and Other Stories – David Levithan – I really like his storytelling and I like the idea of a various types of love stories in this collection.
Decision: Keep

Keep: 8
Remove:2
Total TBR – 245

Didn’t do the greatest at removing this time but there are quite a few on this list I really want to get to soon.

Down the TBR Hole #10

I am close to a month since the last one of these. I am almost done with my current book but not sure when I will have time to get the review out. So I figured I would do another addition of this one in the meantime.

This was originally created by Lost in a Story .

Dress Codes for Small Town – Courtney C. Stevens – A book exploring sexual fluidity while also questioning how to understand what you want despite the labels laid on you? Yes, please.
Decision: Keep

The Bookseller  – Cynthia Swanson – I love the idea of not knowing what reality is real.
Decision: Keep

Love is the Higher Law – David Levithan – I do love David Levithan’s books. This one seems super emotional so it will be one I have to be in the mood for, but I do want to get to it eventually.
Decision: Keep

Of Breakable Things – A. Lynden Rolland – I like the idea of choosing to stay in the spirit world instead of coming back to life.
Decision: Keep

The Lantern’s Ember – Colleen Houck – Love the idea of a deal with the devil and a defiant woman who won’t listen.
Decision: Keep

The Book of Lost Things – John Connolly – Whispering books. I am in.
Decision: Keep

If You Could Be Mine – Sara Farizan – Wow, this seems intense. Two women in love in a country that could end in their death if found out. A decision to change sexes to be together? I am extremely interested.
Decision:Keep

Nothing is Strange – Mike Russell – It seems alright but nothing really pulls me in.
Decision: Remove

The Culling – Steven dos Santos – Sounds a lot like the Hunger Games
Decision: Remove

The Last Equation of Isaac Severy – Nova Jacobs– A mystery that is kind of vague and generic sounding but there is also something pulling me in. I’ll leave it on for now.
Decision: Keep

Keep – 8
Remove – 2

Didn’t do the best job clearing anything out this time but I was reminded of some books that I want to move up my list!

Down the TBR Hole #9

It has been about a month since I’ve done one of these posts so I decided to jump back into my TBR shelf and see what can come off. This is a handy thing to do since I have a tendency to continuously add to this list, so taking off some is not a bad thing!

Current TBR: 252

The Children’s Home – Charles Lambert
The summary tells me very little. It also barely has 2 stars on Goodreads which is a bit disconcerting. I don’t find myself wanting to run out and get this one, so it’ll go for now.
Decision: Remove

Ren: The Man Behind the Monster (Book #1) – Sarah Noffke
I like the idea of someone realizing that having too much power has corrupted them. I am curious how this one explores the idea of someone understanding they are a monster and fixing that side of them.
Decision: Keep

Soul’s Asylum: The Parasite Lives – Derek E. Pearson
Holy crap there are at least 4 plot lines in the summary alone. Aliens, telepaths, an epidemic and a murder mystery. I am already too overwhelmed.
Decision: Remove

How to Suppress Women’s Writing – Joanna Russ
Exploring the the barriers that are in place for women and minorities in the art world? I am all for that.
Decision: Keep

Envious – Katie Keller-Nieman
Sound alright but nothing new or exciting.
Decision: Remove

Riders (Riders #1) – Veronica Rossi
Someone dies and becomes one of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Yes, please!
Decision: Keep

Figment (Insanity #2) – Cameron Jace
Why do I have the second in a series on my list without the first? I mean I like the idea of Alice in our world but I’m gonna have to read the first book then decide if I go onto the second.
Decision: Remove

Time on Her Hands (The Lineage 3) – Melissa Jarvis
Again somehow ended up adding the third book in a series. I have to stop doing that!
Decision: Remove

The Rook (The Checquy Files #1) – Daniel O’Malley
A mystery with a number of elements, sounds interesting.
Decision: Keep

Breeder (Arrow’s Flight #1) – Casey Hays
Not sure I like the idea of someone being forced to breed and then fighting that, especially since the summary sounds like there is a lot of harsh punishments involved.
Decision: Remove

Kept: 4
Removed: 6
Current TBR – 243 (Again found a few books that I have read and thought were on my “Read” list but somehow weren’t. This is a good exercise for finding the glitches on the shelf too)

Have you read any of these? What are your thoughts on what I decided to keep versus get rid of?

Down the TBR Hole #6

Time again to see if I can pair down my TBR shelf a little bit.

Current TBR – 257

The Painted Lady – Joseph Faiank
This sounds kind of generic. One of those stories where a bad decision in the past comes back to haunt the main character. At the moment it doesn’t sound all that different or interesting.
Decision: Remove

The Dead Club – Manuel Ruiz
A story about Purgatory, the Grim Reaper, an Oracle and the Underworld? Yes, please!
Decision: Keep

This Shadow Follows Me – Jospeh McGinnis
I own this one. It does sound really powerful but also really difficult to read. I will read it one day but I have to be in the right mindset for it and just haven’t been there yet.
Decision: Keep

In Time Like These (In Time Like These #1) – Nathan Van Coops
This one is all about time travel. I adore time travel stories. I will definitely be getting to this one sooner or later.
Decision: Keep

Marking Time (The Immortal Descendants, #1)- April White
This one sounds fascinating. The idea of being a descendant of time and being able to travel through time. There is also some complicated love story and elements of Nature, Fate, War and Death. I am extremely intrigued by this one. I think it is one the next time I do a buying spree I’ll defiantly buy it!
Decision: Keep

Lost Angeles (Lost Angeles #1) -Lisa Mantchev
This is a paranormal romance, which I do enjoy. But this one sounds very generic and it surrounds a vampire. I am still tired of vampires.
Decision: Remove

Mandala Madness – Adult Coloring Book – Kymie Edwins
I added this after a giveaway. I do enjoy adult coloring books but there is no reason it needs to be on my TBR shelf.
Decision: Remove

Nation of Enemies – H.A. Raynes
This is a thriller and I will say that at the moment it doesn’t really hit me as something I want to read. Though the concept is one that seems like it may be something that has a lot of relevant thoughts for today’s society. I will keep it just because I do want to read it in the future.
Decision: Keep

Her Blackened Soul – Isra Sravenheart
This again sounds like it would be alright. It sounds a bit too out there with animals lovers or something. It isn’t pulling at my reading desires right now.
Decision: Remove

No True Echo – Gareth P. JonesNo True Echo – Gareth P. Jones
A story about being stuck in a time-loop, sounds good to me!
Decision: Keep

Kept: 6
Remove: 4
Current TBR Count: 254

Have you read any of the above books? What do you think of my choices for some of these?

Down the TBR Hole #5

Been a minute since we went through my TBR shelf.  I first saw this tag on on Howling Libraries  It was originally created by Lost in a Story and seems like a good way to go through some of my TBR on Goodreads and see what is there and what I can get rid of or push me to start reading.
Links will be  on the titles for the books Goodreads page. (I am going to do ten for this round of this tag).

  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Current TBR – 250

Chimera – John Barth
I have this one on my shelf. I like the idea of telling different myths. I am currently in a myth mood so maybe I’ll pick this one up soon.
Decision: Keep

Legend- David Lynn Golemon
This is another one of those thrillers with a twist to history. I like the idea and I get into the moods for these stories at least once a year.
Decision: Keep

Cyptonomicon – Neal Stephenson
I tried to read this book years ago. I still have it but I remember only being able to get through about 50 pages. I remember it being hard to read and not holding my attention. I still own it but I don’t think it is one I will ever get back too.
Decision: Remove

I Am Number Four – Pittacus Lore
I liked the idea of the story but I have heard some not great things about the author. I don’t have a desire to read anything by him.
Decision: Remove

Turning Angel – Greg Iles
I have zero memory of this book. After reading the summary it just sounds generic murder mystery. Doesn’t hold any interest for me.
Decision: Remove

The Absolute Sandman, Volume One – Neil Gaiman
I have read the first issue of this comic. I enjoyed it. I just haven’t gotten around to getting anymore of them. I will finish it though because I have heard such great things about it.
Decision: Keep

Unwind – Neal Shusterman
I just finished Scythe by Neal Shusterman and I loved it. I am interested in this series more now.
Decision: Keep

Wither – Lauren DeStefano
This kind of sounds interesting but it didn’t stand out that much. I don’t know if would ever actually pick this one up.
Decision: Remove

The Forest of Hands and Teeth – Carrie Ryan
This summary reminded me of the movie The Village. I know that ending was terrible and I can’t get those vibes out of my head.
Decision: Remove

Delirium – Lauren Oliver
A world where love is outlawed? Sounds interesting.
Decision: Keep

Kept: 5
Removed: 5

Outlander (Outlander #1) – Diana Gabaldon – Date added: May 19th – 2014
I have heard so many things about this series. I am interested in it, but it seems like a long series. I have to wait until I am in the place to go through a longer series.(I have multiple parts of this series on my To- Read shelf. I am going to include them all in this one, instead of doing them all separate).

Decision – Keep

A Discovery of Witches – Deborah Harkness – Date added: May 19th, 2014
My mom just recently finished this book and she liked it but wasn’t thrilled. I still want to read it eventually but I think it will stay on the list for a much later time.(I have all three books in the series on my list so again I am just going to put them all into this one decision).

Decision: Keep

Guardian (Eyes of the Republic #2) – Claire Delacroix – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I remember reading the first book in this series a long time ago. I do remember enjoying it. I think when I get back into the mood for some paranormal romance I will go back to these.

Decision: Keep

Fantasy Lover (Hunter Legends Sereis #1) – Sherrilyn Kenyon – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I read part of another series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and I remember really enjoying it. I actually think I have most of that series but never finished it. I sort of got tired of the paranormal romance genre but I will go back to these one day I am sure.

Decision: Keep

69440323868437980773322320

Night Pleasures (Dark-Hunter #1) – Sherrilyn Kenyon – Date added: January 17th, 2015
Another series that sounds interesting. Maybe one day I’ll just go on a binge of all of these. (Though there are like 14 of them or more so we shall see if that actually happens).

Decision: Keep

Dogs and Goddesses – Jennifer Cruise – Date added: January 17th, 2015
My mom read this one and she really enjoyed it. I definitely want to get to this one soon.

Decision: Keep

One Year Gone (Supernatural #7) – Rebecca Dessertine – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I was obsessed with Supernatural at one point. I read most of the books but then got bored of them. I still watch the show but don’t think I have any desire to go back to the books.

Decision: Remove

Pattern Recognition (Blue Ant, #1) – William Gibson – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I believe I have this book on my shelf. I know I have read other books by this author before and remember liking them. Now that I see this I want to go back to it and see if it lives up to what I remember.

Decision: Keep

100926081k4NbquV+L

The Xeno Solution – Nelson Erlick – Date added: January 17th, 2015
I have had this book on my shelf for ages. I haven’t even thought about picking it up. I think it is time to just realize this one holds no interest for me.

Decision: Remove

Fall Back – Peter Niesewand – Date added: 17th, 2015
So this is on my list because it was a book my dad owned. I don’t think I will ever actually read it but I will keep the physical book because it was his.

Decision: Remove

Percentage Removed: 30%

Many of these were part of a series so I technically went through a lot more than 10 books on my shelf. Didn’t remove much but did remind myself of some fun books that I might pick up soon.

What are your thoughts on any of these? Do you agree or disagree with my decisions?

Beautiful Creatures – Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl – Date added: August 22, 2013
I think I added this one after hearing about the movie? Through looking back at it now, I just don’t feel any real connection to it.

Decision: Remove

I am America – Stephen Colbert – August 22nd, 2013
I think I added this after I read John Stewart’s book on the history of America. I liked that and still own it. I think I will keep this because one day it would be fun to read. It will probably just be awhile before I get to it.

Decision: Keep

Suicide Notes – Thomas Ford – Date added: August 22nd 2013
This sounds interesting and like it would have a good look at life. I am still intrigued by the plot.

Decision: Keep

The Golem and the Jinni – Helene Wecker – August 22nd, 2013
I have heard mixed reviews about this one. I still like the idea of the plot through. I am all for different mystical creatures outside your usuals like vampires and werewolves.

Decision: Keep

419131615852541Y5oe4rmlL41bz6juMwiL._SX323_BO1,204,203,200_

The Children of Men – P.D. James – August 22nd, 2013
I love dystopian stories. This one is a classic and I will get to it one day.

Decision: Keep

The Never List – Koethi Zan – August 22nd, 2013
I have no idea how this one ended up on my list. Reading the summary again, sadism and torture seem to the main plot points. I have zero interest in either of those.

Decision: Remove

A Clockwork Orange – Anthony Burgess – August 22nd, 2013                                                    I own this one and I do want to read it one day. I remember starting it once and the slang throwing me off. I have to find a time when I am ready to try to decipher the meanings.

Decision: Keep

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night – Mark Haddon – August 22nd, 2013
I will get to this one, one day. I have every intention of reading it. I have heard great things. I just have to find the mood and time.

Decision; Keep

The Lovely Bones – Alice Sebold – August 22nd, 2013
I was interested in the plot at first with this one but as time as moved on I feel like my interest has all but gone. Plus I have heard very mixed reviews about it.

Decision: Remove

The Lincoln Myth – Steve Barry – May 19th, 2014
I think this was added when I into reading history thrillers. I do like these stories where a some ancient artifact connected to history is sought because it can change the world. But I think I will stick with James Rollins at the moment.

Decision- Remove

Have you read any of the books on my current list? What are your thoughts on what I decided to keep and remove?

What Color is Your Parachute? 2014: A Practical Manual for Job Hunters and Career Changes
– Richard N. Bolles – Date Added September 12, 2013

I added this when I was job hunting. It was suggested to be me by someone who was helping me network. I now have a job that I love and do not plan on changing anytime soon.

Decision: Remove

Gone (Gone #1) – Michael Grant – Date Added: August 22nd, 2013

I don’t remember adding this one but it sounds interesting. Adults are gone and so is every modern convince. Almost sounds like a modern day version of Lord of the Flies. Synopsis still intrigues me so I’ll let it hang out for a bit.

Decision: Keep

Beauty Awakened (Angels of the Dark, #2) – Gena Showalter – Date added: August 22nd, 2013

I love Gena Showalter’s Lord of the Underworld series. This one is sort of connected by the angels they work with. I think I will go back to this series once the Lords series finishes this year.

Decision: Keep

The Time Machine – H.G. Wells – Date added: August 22nd, 2013

I have every intention of reading this one. It is one of the few “classic” books that I am eager to read, I just keep getting distracted by more recent published books.

Decision: Keep

Ender’s Game (Ender’s Saga #1) – Orson Scott Card – Date added: August 22nd, 2013

Another one I do have every intention of reading. I have good things about it and I do own it, so one day I will start this series. Just not sure when that will be exactly.

Decision: Keep

The Boy Who Could See Demons – Carolyn Jess-Cooke – Date added: August 22nd, 2013

I have zero memory of this book. It sounds kind of interesting but ultimately doesn’t sound like one I have too much desire in reading.

Decision: Remove

How We Decide – Jonah Lehrer  – Date added:August 22nd 2013

I love psychology and books about how the brain works but this was also added at a time when I was trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted in life. I have a much better hold on my life at the moment so I don’t feel the need to read this one anymore.

Decision: Remove

Girl Interrupted – Susanna Kaysen – Date added: August 22nd, 2013

I have heard great things about this one and the movie based off of it. I am still intrigued by it and hope to get it to sooner rather than later.

Decision: Keep

An Unquiet Mind:: A memoir of Moods and Madness – Kay Redfield Jaminson – Date added: August 22nd, 2013

I think this one was another one added when I was in my mood of psychology and understanding the brain more. I am still interested in many of these subject but this one doesn’t hold any interest for me anymore.

Decision: Remove

The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry – Jon Ronson – Date added: August 22nd, 2013

Now this one still hold serious interest for me. I have always been interested in the idea of what makes someone a psychopath and why. Now that I have been reminded of this one I will have to put it higher on my list of books to read.

Decision: Keep
